"All the way through his schooling at Stoke Gabriel Primary my son has been nurtured, supported, encouraged and celebrated for his efforts. The consistency of this amazingly high level of teaching hasn't changed or dropped despite the staff changes that are inevitable in the schooling system today. As a parent I couldn't be more grateful to the School and the Academy for the amazing Primary School experience we have been fortunate enough to have had."

Oracy

What is Oracy?

"Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language."

Oracy develops students' confidence, articulacy and capacity to learn.

- Voice 21

In our school oracy is:

  • The ability to express yourself and your ideas
  • Engaging with the ideas of your peers and responding to these
  • Reasoning together
  • Listening to understand
  • Changing people’s minds
  • Telling compelling stories
  • Developing arguments
  • Speaking up for what you believe in
  • Developing a love and knowledge of a wide range of vocabulary
Our vision for Oracy
At Stoke Gabriel, we believe that oracy is a vital skill that must be explicitly taught and learnt by children. We endeavour to encourage rich, purposeful talk in all of our classrooms so that all children can leave our school as confident speakers who can articulate their ideas, respectfully disagree with others and comprehend a large range of vocabulary.

What does this look like in practice?
In our school, teachers ensure that:
  • Activities are embedded every day for children to practice their oracy skills across the curriculum.
  • Children have the opportunity to refer to sentence stems so that they can structure their talk in an organised manner.
  • Children are able to present their ideas to the class.
  • Everyone feels safe to agree and disagree with each other's ideas.
  • Children have time to develop key talk skills including: turn taking, eye contact, active listening and responding in a respectful way.
